The Legacy Behind My Legacy

Twenty-two years ago yesterday, my first daughter, Serenity, gained her wings.

She was barely two years old.

There are losses that change the course of your life forever. This was one of them.

For a long time, I thought grief was something I needed to overcome. What I learned instead is that grief becomes something you carry. It shapes you. It teaches you. If you let it, it can even give purpose to your pain.

Serenity is the reason I think differently about legacy.

She is the reason I pursued the education, experiences, and opportunities that I did. She is the reason I became intentional about protecting what matters most. She is the reason I understand that tomorrow is never promised and that every moment with those we love is a gift.

In many ways, the life my two younger children have today was born from a promise made in the aftermath of losing her. A promise that I would keep moving forward. A promise that I would build something that outlives me. A promise that her short life would leave a lasting impact.

The legacy I am working to create for my children today was first inspired by a little girl who never had the chance to grow up.

To the other mothers, fathers, and families with angels in the sky, I see you.

I honor your love.

I honor your strength.

And I honor the children who continue changing lives long after they’ve gone.

Yesterday, I remembered Serenity.

Today, I honor the legacy she helped create.
