The Stories They Didn’t Teach Us in School

Let’s be honest…

Most of what we learned in school about history?

It was just a surface-level version. A highlight reel.

Names, dates, battles — rinse and repeat.

But what about the real stories?

The ones that happened right where you live?

The ones that didn’t make it into your textbook?

Every time I visit a different city, I make it a point to explore.

The local park. The zoo. Museums. Historic sites.

Not just for fun — but to understand where I am and who came before me.

Because when you look closer —

You’ll see that every city has layers.

Stories that were covered up.

Events that were never talked about.

Voices that were left out of the narrative.

And what’s wild?

Once you start learning history at the local level,

you realize how little we were actually told.

The past isn’t always clean. It’s not always proud.

But it’s real.

And when we understand it — we grow from it.

I don’t have all the answers. I’m still learning.

But I believe we all benefit when we share what we know.

So I’ll ask you:

→ What’s one thing about your city’s history that people should know?

→ Have you ever visited a new place and learned something that shook you?

→ Did what you learned inspire you to invest in that community?

Let’s teach each other.

Because truth isn’t just in the books — it’s in us.
