When Freedom Fractures: A Soldier’s Reflection in a Divided Nation

Today is the U.S. Army’s birthday.

And for those of us who’ve worn the uniform, it’s not just a date on the calendar—it’s a solemn reminder of the vow we made to defend freedoms… not just the convenient ones. All of them.

I served almost a decade in active duty.

I’ve saluted flags that were later folded.

I’ve seen brothers and sisters laid to rest with them draped across their caskets.

So yes, it hits different when I see those same flags—ripped down and lit aflame in the name of protest.

I say this not to silence expression—

But to remind us all: freedom speaks best through truth, not destruction.

Yes, the “No Kings Movement” is rising.

And yes, many are raising their voices with clarity and peace.

But alongside them, others are vandalizing immigrant-owned businesses,

fueling violence, misquoting law,

and using pain as justification for chaos.

And in all of this, the real tragedy?

It’s not just the destruction of property or symbols.

It’s the destruction of understanding.

We’re shouting over one another instead of listening.

Here’s what I know—

From combat boots to boardrooms, from protest lines to parenting:

Freedom isn’t free

—but it’s also not lawless.

We’re meant to protect the house we all live in, not burn it down.

🔹 Are we building something better, or reacting to something broken?

🔹 Are we protecting our future, or prolonging our pain?

🔹 Are we honoring the fallen, or forgetting what they stood for?

In moments like this, the truth is rarely black and white.

But kindness, empathy, and understanding?

Those colors never bleed.

Let us rise—not against each other, but with each other.

For peace.

For healing.

For the future we all share.

🗣 What does “freedom of expression” mean to you?

How do we honor it without tearing each other apart?
